Troubleshooting

Common issues and how to solve them.

Images Not Loading

RAW files show as blank or broken

  • Check format support: See File Formats for supported RAW types. If your camera is very new, a FLOGVIT.culling update may be needed.
  • Corrupted file: Try opening the same file in another application. If it fails there too, the file itself may be damaged.
  • Permissions: On macOS, ensure FLOGVIT.culling has access to the folder (System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders).

Thumbnails load slowly

  • Storage type: Files on HDD or network drives load slower than SSD. Consider copying to a local SSD for culling.
  • Cache: First load is always slower. Subsequent visits to the same folder use the disk cache. Increase cache size in Settings → Performance → Disk Cache.
  • Large folder: Folders with 10,000+ images take longer on initial scan. The progress bar in the status bar shows loading status.

Performance Issues

App feels sluggish or stuttery

  • GPU drivers: Update to the latest GPU drivers. FLOGVIT.culling requires Vulkan 1.2 (Windows/Linux) or Metal (macOS).
  • Memory: Check Settings → Performance → Memory Cache. If your system has 16+ GB RAM, increase the cache size.
  • Background processes: Heavy background tasks (antivirus scans, backups, video encoding) compete for disk I/O.

High memory usage

The memory cache holds decoded images for fast navigation. This is expected behavior. Reduce the cache in Settings → Performance if needed. Memory is released when switching folders.

Metadata Issues

Ratings/labels don't appear in Lightroom

  • XMP sidecar files must be in the same folder as the image files
  • In Lightroom: select the images, right-click → Metadata → Read Metadata from File
  • Check Settings → IPTC/XMP → Compatibility Mode and enable Lightroom compatibility

IPTC fields show garbled text

This usually means an encoding mismatch. Go to Settings → IPTC/XMP → Encoding and switch between UTF-8 and Latin-1. Use Tools → Fix Text Encoding to batch-convert affected files.

GPS coordinates not showing

  • Check that the image actually has GPS data embedded (not all cameras include it)
  • For images without GPS, use a GPS tracklog. See Metadata & IPTC → GPS Tracklog

Upload Issues

FTP upload fails or times out

  • Verify connection settings in Settings → Upload Profiles
  • Check that the remote path exists on the server
  • Try switching protocol: if FTP fails, try FTPS or SFTP
  • Firewalls may block FTP passive mode — SFTP (port 22) is usually more reliable

Upload stuck at "Uploading"

  • Check your network connection
  • Large files (50+ MB RAW) take time on slow connections
  • The upload queue in the status bar shows progress per file

Display Issues

Colors look wrong

  • Check Settings → Color Management and ensure a correct ICC profile is selected
  • Enable color management for previews if not already active
  • Verify your monitor is calibrated

UI text is too small or too large

Adjust in Settings → Display → Font Scale (80%–150%).

Import Issues

Memory card not detected

  • Ensure the card is properly inserted and mounted by the OS
  • Check that the card shows up in Finder first
  • Click Rescan in the import dialog to refresh the device list

Import is slow

  • Check both source and destination drives. Importing from SD card to HDD is slower than to SSD.
  • Checksum verification (SHA-256) adds ~10% overhead but ensures data integrity. Switch to xxHash for faster verification.
  • Dual-copy (primary + backup) doubles the write time

License Issues

"License expired" but I have an active subscription

FLOGVIT.culling needs to contact the license server periodically. If you've been offline for more than 30 days, connect to the internet and restart the app. It will refresh your license automatically.

Can't activate on a new machine

Each license has a maximum number of active machines. Deactivate an old machine first in Settings → License, or from the account dashboard on the website.

Resetting the Application

If all else fails, you can reset FLOGVIT.culling to its default state:

  1. Quit the application
  2. Delete the configuration folder:
    • ~/.config/flogvit/
  3. Restart the application

This removes all settings, keyboard shortcuts, upload profiles, and favorites. Your images and XMP sidecar files are never affected.
